Melissa & Dave - Adventures at Sea

Drake Bay

We set off from Dominicalito early this morning for Drake Bay.  Most of the trip was uneventful till a squall came upon us quite suddenly.  Normally you can see a squall kicking up white caps before it gets to you.  But this one must have just formed and not had the chance to generate any wind waves.  It heeled us over pretty good and Melissa started screeching – particularly when the humidifier under the nav station when flying across the cabin.  Yikes.  Dave quickly took down the sails and we were fine.  But the squall kept up and did generate some wind waves that were splashing all over the deck.  We forgot to close the bathroom portal, so it was soaked.  Oops.

Before we left this morning, Wanuskewin closed all their thru hulls so that they could test to see if it was the stuffing box that was leaking.  The stuffing box is where the propeller shaft comes through to the engine.  Luckily they found that wasn’t leaking.  Further investigation found it was actually their salt water rinse system that is plumbed to their kitchen sink.  Boats often have these pumps to conserve fresh water on long voyages.  It’s not essential to Wanuskewin at this point so unless the boys can figure a way to fix it Mike will just shut it down.  Good to know they aren’t going to sink!

We headed into a restaurant on a small cove for dinner.  Landing on the beach here looked tricky with the big swell, so we opted to go into a cove that had a floating dock.  Turned out to be a super nice place – Aguila De Osa Cabins.  They have a scuba diving shop so we booked a dive for tomorrow morning.  We had a nice dinner, and then on the way out we saw something in the water.  Looked like a big glowing eye.  At first we thought we were imagining it, but after a bit it became clear it was probably a crocodile!  Eerie to just see his eye in the dark!
