Melissa & Dave - Adventures at Sea

Finally we catch something!

We can see patches of blue sky occasionally and it didn’t rain today.  You can tell the sun is trying its best to break through the cloud layer.  So things are looking up.  We pull into Khutze Inlet and are DELIGHTED at the waterfall.  The most spectacular we have seen to date.  We puzzle over why the guidebooks don’t make a bigger deal out of this spot as it is one of the most spectacular we have visited.  These pictures will give you some idea as to the scale of this waterfall coming down from 3000 feet above.

We were sitting at anchor for no more than 30 minutes when Melissa spots a grizzly bear on the shore.  He appears to be devouring something.  Then he takes to swimming on the beach.  We speculate that maybe he is fishing for something.  We watch with the binoculars for close to an hour.  Then we decide to row the dingy over a bit closer in the hopes of a picture or two with the camera.  Dave says that we “won’t get closer to shore than where the bear could stand up in the water”.  Seems reasonable.  But by the time we row even a bit towards the shore he is gone.  None the less, we continue to be amazed by the multiple waterfalls and the approximately zillion seals in this bay.  We’ve never seen so many seals in one place.  And at one point we look down and see the biggest Dungeness crab we’ve ever seen walking on the bottom.  His body must have measured 10 inches.  The picture below was taken from the skiff – it’s hard to see, but there are 7 seals in this picture.

We put down the crab trap and within two hours we have two nicely sized Dungeness crabs.  Dave cleans them and Melissa cooks them.  Then we put them in a zip lock and Dave lowered them into the bay to cool (like putting beer in the river to cool when you are camping!).  Dave loves this because it means we aren’t using battery power by way of the fridge to cool the cooked crabs.  We ate them for dinner with some garlic butter.  Yum.

And then after dinner Dave checks the traps again to find two ginormous Dungeness crabs.  Lunch tomorrow!
