Melissa & Dave - Adventures at Sea

This was the rain we expected in Alaska!

It rained today and yesterday.  And rained.  And rained.  And rained.  The radar got a good workout as the rain was so dense there were points where visibility was a quarter mile.  Bleck.  Most of the time it looked like this out the front windshield:

Not dangerous as the seas were calm, just drippy.  We were super happy that the leak in the mast seems to be fixed and there were no leaks in the cockpit.  None the less, Melissa spent most of the two days below reading while Dave sat on top of his bucket so he could get close to the front windshield trying to see well enough to navigate through the grey muck.

Yesterday we made our way south to Kumealon Inlet.  When we reached the bay we turned to sharp to starboard thinking that was where we were supposed to anchor, but all of a sudden the depth meter read 12 feet.  Given that the keel is 6 feet, that means we were in 6 feet of water below the boat.  Dave hits the full reverse.  Seems that was the mud flat corner of the bay.  We moved over a bit and found the right anchorage in 60 feet of water.  When Dave went on deck to put down the anchor he got soaked even in his rain slicker.  We’ve now gone well over 1100 miles total.

Today we traveled to Lowe Inlet which is supposed to have a great waterfall where you can anchor.  The clouds were still swirling about threatening to fog us in when we anchored just to the side of the small waterfall which was not as impressive as advertised.  We anchored in 100 feet of water.  Thank goodness we have the 300 feet of new chain and rode else we couldn’t have anchored here.
