Melissa & Dave - Adventures at Sea

Where are thou Uber?

We've been out on the boat long enough that we need to restock supplies.  We are currently anchored at Poulsbo, so Dave takes Melissa ashore where she plans to catch an Uber to Winslow where her favorite Bainbridge Island grocery store is.  Plus her Hitchcock Restaurant CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) box should be ready for pick up.  First off takes 30 minutes for an Uber to show up as there are not very many of them.  Melissa wonders if she will be able to get back to Poulsbo later in the day.  <insert scary foreshadowing music here> Indeed the Uber driver confirms that for whatever reason, COVID has caused a lot of the Uber drivers to stop driving.  Not clear if they are scared to pick up rides, or if they were forced due to drop in ridership to find other things to do.  Upon reaching Winslow she first heads to the spa for a pedicure.  Yes, a luxury in these times to be sure.  But the spa had great hygiene procedures and a contact tracing form to complete upon entry.  After a nice hour having her toes done she heads to Hitchcock to pick up her CSA box only to be told its not there.  A bit of confusion as she normally picks up on the Seattle side - and Melissa was unaware on the Bainbridge side there are two different pick up locations.  No sweat they tell her the box will arrive soon.  So Melissa grocery shops first.  Filling her little collapsible cart to the brim with a week's worth of groceries.  When she gets back to Hitchcock - wheely cart in tow - brimming with groceries - the box is ready.  So she tries to call an Uber.  And a Lyft.  No luck, both say "no cars available".  She retries multiple times.  Uber charges the credit card each time and then does a credit each time the ride cancels.  After multiple tries, this locks up the credit card.  Note that Melissa only had one credit card that she had thrown into the dry bag she took with her - so no other options.  She goes to the Capital One app on her phone to unlock the card, only that doesn't work either.  What to do now?  In frustration she calls Dave.  He suggests calling a friend on the island to see if she might be willing and able to help.  Melissa says, hey, maybe there is a taxi?  Indeed she calls the taxi and they say they will pick her up in 5 minutes.  She then instructs the taxi to take her to the hardware store up on the highway on our way since we need little propane tanks for the BBQ, and then at the Safeway back in Poulsbo for ice.  Despite the two stops - the taxi is cheaper than Uber was on the way over to Winslow.  Go figure.  Meanwhile, Melissa calls Dave to alert him that she is almost back to the dingy dock in Poulsbo and ready for pickup.  Dave is already nearly at the dingy dock - having been monitoring Melissa's location via her cell phone.  (Don't you just love technology?)  We haul all the grocery bags aboard Apsaras where Melissa rearranges the fridge and freezer so that everything fits and is stacked in order of planned usage so minimum digging in the freezer is needed to get out what she will want later.  Whew.  A half a day dedicated to getting groceries.  Reminds us both of Central America where provisioning the boat might be a whole day's worth of adventure.  But we are well stocked and ready to stay out for a while longer should we choose to do so.  Dave starts the generator to give us enough power to cool down the fridge and freezer again without draining the batteries.  Meanwhile, Dave spots a ski boat drifting by.  They seem disabled.  He heads out on the skiff to see if he can lend a hand.  Sure enough, their engine quit.  He tows them back to Apsaras where we get them some wine and offer up whatever tools they need.  After an hour or so the husband diagnoses the problem - the fuel supply hose has gotten loose.  He secures it and they roar off.  Always put something into the karma bank when you can is our motto.  <again insert foreshadowing music here>
